Family Shares Story of Frozen Egg Baby

LEAWOOD, Kan. — She is the first baby born in the metro area and the entire state of Kansas using a frozen egg.  Her name is Morgan Bell and on Wednesday, the infertility doctor who helped make her life possible got to meet her.

It was November of last year when Jessica and Ryan Dickson saw their sweet baby for the first time.  Fast forward to today and that ultrasound picture returned to the doctor’s office, life and in person.

Dr. Sam Kim, who performed the frozen egg implantation, met baby Morgan saying, “Oh my gosh!  I am so excited!  There’s so much joy. This is the joy of my job anyway.  Yes!  Oh wow!  I see a beautiful human being.”

Dr. Kim says freezing a woman’s eggs is very difficult because they are large cells. But, Dr. Kim says baby Morgan is living proof it can work.

Royals Win Four Straight, Sweep Rangers

ARLINGTON, Texas –The Kansas City Royals continued their hot streak on Tuesday night by defeating the Texas Rangers 7-4, sweeping a two-game series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.

The Royals (15-20, 11-7 away) have now won a season-high four straight games. Since their 12-game losing skid in April, the Royals have gone 12-6.

Every Royals hitter had an at bat in the first inning, and before many Rangers fans had a chance to find their seat, Kansas City held a 4-0 lead.

Third baseman Mike Moustakas crushed a solo home run in the third to give Kansas City a 6-0 lead. As Moustakas circled the bases, Rangers players heard a smattering of boos from the crowd. From a Royals fan’s perspective, those boos might have sounded like Moooooooose.

Mission Man Battles Former Apartment Complex

MISSION, Kan. — Christopher Dixon is embroiled in a financial fight with the managers at The Falls Apartment Complex on Foxridge Drive in Mission, Kansas. It’s not the first time the complex has made headlines. In September, 2010, Dixon says he moved into the apartment complex hoping to start a new life, but he says his dream suddenly turned into a big disaster.

“I reported to them before the fire that there was not only toxic mold inside my apartment, but there were leaks in the ceiling.,” Dixon said.

Twice, Dixon says crews replastered the walls.

“They didn’t offer any place for me to move, ” he adds.

Months later, in July, 2011, a fire broke out inside two apartments at the falls–killing two people. For Dixon, that was the final straw. The General Motors assembly line worker, worried about his own safety, broke his lease two months early and moved out.

Kan. Republicans Continue Redistricting Debate

TOPEKA, Kan. — You might think in such a heavily republican state, Kansas would have no problem with redistricting. But right now, Kansas is one of the last states in the country still debating the maps.

And it turns out the biggest fight is between Republicans.

The fight has been going on so long now that the Kansas Secretary of State has had to push back election filing dates and the whole thing could derail the state’s August 7 primary elections if it’s not resolved soon.

Lawmakers have to redraw political maps after the census to adjust for population changes. Traditionally, the Kansas Senate and House redraws their own maps and each body approves the others without a squabble. But this year the Kansas House, controlled by conservative Republicans, rejected the Kansas Senate’s map. The State Senate is controlled by moderate Republicans.

Cash-Strapped “The Jo” Faces Route Cuts

OLATHE, Kan. — Steep budget cuts could mean some big changes for Johnson County’s bus system, as at least 10 of the system’s two dozen routes could face elimination.

According to a report in the Kansas City Star, after years of expansion, a major budget shortfall could lead to drastic service reductions for The Jo.

The Jo’s fiscal year 2013 $12 million budget is down $1.5 million from fiscal year 2012, and includes cuts in federal, state and county support.

Under new plans, only five of The Jo’s nearly two dozen routes would survive, while another five – including a popular route to Lawrence – would survive “if possible.” Another 10 routes are slated for elimination entirely.

The Jo’s two services for elderly and disabled riders – Special Edition and SWIFT – would remain intact, the Star reports.
